Galerie Kern Origins

After almost two decades of studying working in the engineering industry, I was starting to envisage a sabbatical to refresh my mind. Tentatively, I had already planned an extended trip to Japan, hoping to indulge in its artistic and engineering excellence first-hand.

Then, several fortuitous coincidences presented an opportunity too good to forego.

Galerie Kern was born and offered me a unique chance to merge my love of both art and engineering. Indeed, in retrospect, it is amazing how many pieces fell into place at the exactly the right time. For this, and the people who have helped, inspired and guided me, I am eternally grateful.

Galerie Kern started as an inspired and spontaneous idea and has made great strides in a very short time. The first two exhibitions will be displayed in a pop-up gallery format in Zurich. Together with my dedicated friends, we are further refining the concept and direction that Galerie Kern is taking.

We are looking into offering services in curation and art management and have already begun organizing the 2020 exhibitions. We are also building a cluster of creative businesses in the greater Zurich area that share our love of the arts.

As this project grows, the nature and direction of the Galerie will also evolve. But at its core, the mission will remain to represent aesthetically appealing art and publication of emerging artists. To this end, we will always strive to surpass ourselves and offer the best possible platform for the art and the artist.

Self-Propelled and Off-Course

The "MISS" Iles exhibition was commissioned by Galerie Kern in 2019.

A triad of artists spanning Japan, the United States and Switzerland has interpreted the concept of placing missiles in everyday situations. Such situational placings allow us to ask questions and contemplate answers that may not be as out of place as the situation chosen by the artist.

This exhibition catalogue is a record of the thought process behind the images presented. With a short introduction to each artist and the missiles portrayed, the catalogue will also provide insight into the way each artist set out to produce their images. We hope that you find the images fascinating, aesthetic and unexpected. Galerie Kern would like to thank all our artists and all those who have helped us put together this inaugural exhibition. Further, we would like to thank Rheinmetall Air Defence for access to the historic missiles and image archive.

Galerie Kern - What is it all about?

Galerie Kern, based in Zurich, Switzerland, is the brainchild of Moritz Vischer, a production engineer with a love of elegant yet simple solutions to complex problems.

Galerie Kern commissions selected artists to create a series of works to a given theme that highlights and questions humanity and technology. Although each co-hort of artists is given the same theme, it is fascinating to see how each artists interprets the theme and yet, the common thread can be found. The culmination of these works are exhibited together, allowing the viewer to gain a new perspective on the theme.

We believe it is important to commission up-and-coming artists and present them in a curated manner to the public.

All works exhibited are limited editions or originals and may be purchased on site or via our contact form.
